There have been several changes to the baseball and softball rules for the 2017 season. The following is a partial list that includes some highlights.

  • All baseball and softball teams are now included in the playoffs. See Rule 47.
  • The playoff deposit requirement has been eliminated.
  • The format of the playoffs will be based on regular season record. See Rules 50 - 57.
  • The number of games for the Chic, Midget, and Juvenile age divisions has been reduced from 18 to 16. See Rule 19.
  • Several key roles required to run the playoffs are now formally defined, and if not filled, will prevent the playoff from being held. See Rules 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9.

These items are not rule changes, but are instead operational changes made under the provision of Rule 17:

  • The regular season will start one week earlier than it has in the past.
  • The regular season will end in mid-June.
  • Playoffs will begin in mid-June and will be completed by the end of June.

In addition to the aforementioned changes, there has been some discussion about changing the format of the Atom I and Pixie I Age Divisions to machine pitch. While there does not yet seem to be a broad consensus on this matter, there does seem to be growing interest and support.

As an intermediate step, a formal set of rules for the Rookie Ball program have been drafted and approved by the Board of Governors. These rules will help to align that program such that the progression will more naturally lead to a machine pitch format in the first year of the baseball and softball programs.

Regardless, there is a growing need for inter-league play at the Rookie Ball level and these rules will help to support this integration by reducing confusion and conflict.
